Litton Eyes Welsh Cap

Published in:

Patriotic Mark Litton is determined to be successful in the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh National PGA Championship next month - so he can represent his country again.

The Bedford Golf Club professional finished second in the tournament last year, and is hoping to go one better when the three-day competition gets under way on September 4 at Cardiff Golf Club.

He said: "I've not played any golf recently, and therefore I'm not setting any targets.

"But it is a tournament that I really enjoy playing in, and I was delighted when I finished second last year.

"After finishing second, I was eligible to represent Wales in the European Team Championships. That was a brilliant experience, so I'd be pleased if I qualified again. I really enjoyed playing for Wales."

A number of players from the PGA East Region will also be aiming for success in the tournament, which has a £42,500 prize fund and returns to Cardiff for the first time since 1988.

Downshire's Rhys Ap Iolo, Chelmsford duo Andrew Pestell and Gareth Williams, and David Wood, of St Clere's Hall, will all be hoping to take the title off defending champion Sion Bebb.

But Cardiff Golf Club professional Terry Hanson has warned competitors to expect a stern challenge.

"This course can seem very easy, but it all depends on the pin positions," he explained. "Some days you can play and it can all seem almost too easy but then they'll change the pin positions and it can make it extremely difficult indeed.

"The greens are quite undulating and they can be forgiving one day, but then very unforgiving the next."
