Evans Has Eyes On Second Title

Published in:

Former winner Chris Evans is hoping to eclipse the achievements of his compatriot Ian Woosnam next month when the Cardiff Golf Club hosts the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh National PGA Championship for the first time in 19 years.

This year's tournament, which takes place on 4-6 September, marks an emotional homecoming for Wales' national championship with Ryder Cup hero Ian Woosnam taking top spot when it was last held there in 1988.

Evans has fond memories of watching Woosnam's victory on TV and after turning professional just a year later went on to enjoy similar success by winning the 1992 Championship at Ashburnham Golf Club near Llanelli.

The Tandridge Golf Club professional said: "I remember watching Ian Woosnam on TV win it in 1989 when I was an amateur and then I turned pro the following year. So it was strange just a couple of years later to win the tournament.

"Being Welsh and with this being the national championship it's very special for me. I like to take part every year and being a former winner makes it very special for me indeed."

"I always have high expectations for myself and I will be looking to get near the top of the leaderboard, but whether I live up to those expectations or not is another matter."

The course has seen a multitude of improvements in the intervening years since Woosnam's triumph, as Terry Hanson, who runs the club shop, explains.

"This course can seem very easy, but it all depends on the pin positions," he said. "Some days you can play and it can all seem almost too easy but then they'll change the pin positions and it can make it extremely difficult indeed.

"The greens are quite undulating and they can be forgiving one day, but then very unforgiving the next."

And Evans is well aware of the testing conditions he will face as he bids to win his second title in the Championships.

"I haven't played on the course before but I hear it's very narrow, which doesn't really suit my game," he explains.

"I'm going up to Scotland for five days before the tournament to get as much practice in as I can. I'll also be looking to get a practice round on the course on the Monday night to familiarise myself with it.

"I think it's important to have a look around first to give you an idea for club selection, which is paramount. It's also important that you are confident in the yardage of each hole, particularly the par threes."

Joining Evans on his practice round will be close friend Jonathan Callister, who will be representing Pentland Golf Club in Kent.

While Callister admits that his golf has taken a back seat to his job in recent years, he will still be determined to make an impact at Cardiff next month.
"I don't play too much golf these days because of my job, but I'll still be looking to make the cut and pick up a cheque.

"But I am a realist and know that my living doesn't come from golf. It wont just be for fun though - I wouldn't be going if I didn't think I could win."

Prize money for Wales' premier national championship this year will be £42,500, with the winner receiving in excess of £6,000 and automatic qualification for the 2008 Celtic Manor Wales Open.
