Masters Eyes Weekend Climb

Published in:

A second round three under par 69 has given Yorkshire professional Richard Masters belief that he can climb the leaderboard in today's third round of the PGA Seniors Championship.

The Baildon Golf Club pro followed up his one over par 73 at Suffolk's Stoke by Nayland Club yesterday with an impressive round including five birdies to sit at two under for the tournament alongside Camberley's Glenn Ralph.

Kibworth's Bob Larratt is also here for the weekend after rounds of 72 and 71.

Masters sets out this morning eight shots behind leaders Carl Mason and Canadian Bruce Heuchan but is looking forward to the challenge after shaking off some early tournament nerves.

"It was a bit nervy because you are playing in a good quality field and a very important tournament but I was better today," he said.

"I had a nice swing thought yesterday and it worked well and if I can play two rounds with that same feeling will see what happens.

"I've got the pace of the greens so it would certainly be nice to shoot a couple of rounds under par."

Meanwhile the old adage that the first cut is the deepest rings true for Cheshire pro Richard Green who stands at one over for the tournament level with PGA Senior Club Professional champion Donald Stirling and Wales' Tony Price.

The Bramhall club pro missed last year's cut so was all smiles after making it through to the weekend following a 69.

"I missed the cut here by one last year so I'm pleased to make the weekend and just want to relax and push myself up the leaderboard and see how good or bad I am," he said.

"I like the course, it's not too long for me. I like the greens even though they can make you look stupid."

An added incentive for Green to continue his good form is a place in the Scottish Seniors Open at Dalmahoy later this month which goes to the leading non-exempt PGA qualified golfer in the field.

Brough's Gordon Townhill was an early starter today having made the cut on the mark with a second round 70.
