Morris Dances To Play-Offs Lead

Published in:

Mathew Morris' stunning form shows no sign of letting up as the Hatchford Brook pro ended the first day of the PGA Play-offs at Notts Golf Club one shot ahead of the field.

Morris was triumphant at the Glenbrae PGA Fourball Championship, supported by SkyCaddie at York 10 days ago with partner Adrian Carey and he has carried on in similar fashion at a wet and windy Hollinwell course today.

The Midlander, whose club is next to Birmingham Airport, saw his title hopes take off as he carded the only under par score of the day with his 71 putting him a shot ahead of a posse of players tied on second place on level par 72.

It is only the second time the play-offs have been held and they bring together the top three players from each of the PGA's seven regions for a 36 hole tournament which offers a number of European and Challenge Tour starts.

Afterwards Morris, who won two of seven regional events on his way to topping the Midlands Order of Merit, said: "It's a bit frustrating really. I missed a few good chances on the back nine and definitely think I could have got a better score.

"A couple of putts I thought I would hole missed. There's not much you can do about it, you have just got to get on the next green and try and make it.

"But overall under par is pleasing because the course is playing its full length at the moment.

"It wasn't easy to get the ball close because the weather was changing. The yardages seemed to be changing all the time, it's really difficult to read the wind around here. I hit a few shots and could not believe where they went."

"I definitely think I can win and if I didn't I wouldn't be here."

Fellow Midlanders Simon Lilly (Wellingborough) and Paul Streeter (Southwell) are also both well placed at level par as the tournament moves into its final day.

The play-offs have a prize fund of £15,000 but of more interest to the players are the invitations to the BMW PGA Championship, Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open, European Open and Barclays Scottish Open on the European Tour and the FirstPlus Wales Challenge, Challenge of Ireland, Scottish Challenge and Oceanico Pro-Am Challenge on the Challenge Tour.
