Middlesbrough Golf Club’s Jonathan Lupton put up a good showing in the Australian PGA National Futures Championship at Melbourne’s Sandhurst Golf Club to claim a share of 10th place behind winner Alex Simpson.
The 28-year-old had been in contention going into the final day after opening rounds of 69,71 and 73 put him in a tie for fourth place but a 77 in windy conditions ended his hopes of adding the Futures title to his Powerade Assisants crown.
Meanwhile New South Wales golfer Simpson equalled the best round of the day – a three under par 69 – to win the championship by seven shots with a 273 total.
“This was certainly one of the tournaments I was focusing on to get a good result so I’m pretty happy to win it,” said a delighted Simpson after his round.
“I played fairly solid throughout the week and made no real mistakes out there …. this course is fairly tough so I just tried to keep the ball in play and I chipped and putted well.”
Brent McCullough from Pymble Golf Club on Sydney’s North Shore couldn’t match his course record 65 in round two, his two-over par 74 earning him second spot seven shots behind Simpson with defending champion Julian Reynolds from Windsor Golf Club in third after a one-over par 73 in third.
