Scoring Tough in Europro Opener

Published in:

Only one player managed to break par at the opening day of the PGA EuroPro Tour at Wensum Valley.

The course would be a tough opening test for the players in good weather, but with blustery winds and showers throughout the day, the 156-strong field found the going tough.

Andrew Marshall was one of a cluster of players happy in the clubhouse at one over, and the European Tour regular said he was just relieved to get out of the elements.

"It was very tough out there, really cold, and no great lies on the fairways," said Marshall. "The flag positions were tough flags and it started getting dark quickly which is hard on the last few guys."

It goes without saying that Marshall thought the weather played a massive role in the scoring. "You've got 156 decent players here and we're all just hanging in there trying to get pars on the front nine. There are some par fours and fives on the home stretch you can try to take advantage of, but it's a real battle out there."

Chase Davis had a tough baptism in his professional debut on his home course, carding six over - but a birdie on 18 should give him confidence going into the second round. Royal Norwich's Neil Lythgoe is also six over after his first round of seven bogeys and one birdie.

Weston Park pair Ian Ellis and Danny Chapman both shot four over, with Ellis dropping five shots in his first 11 holes and Chapman one over after 15 before double-bogeying 16 and dropping another shot on the last to spoil a solid round in the wretched weather.

Former England international Stephen Lewton was the man who carded one under for the day, with the Woburn man mastering the elements to hit four birdies. Two players finished level for the day, Australian European Tour player Daniel Gaunt and Wath Golf Club's Christopher Clarke.
