So Solid Crew Ready For Revenge Mission

Published in:

An amateur golfer has put himself through the mill over the winter in a bid to avoid missing out on reaching the grand final of Europe's largest pro-am - for a second successive year.

Len Crew, a 43-year-old quality controller from Hastings, and Beauport Park professional Charles Giddins lost out on a luxury trip to Turkey last year to play in the PGA National Pro-Am Championship via a countback.

But 12 months on, Crew will again partner Giddins at Royal Ashdown Forest on Monday May 12, where they will join more than 40 teams from across the south east bidding to reach this year's grand final at the Sirene Beach & Hotel Resort in Turkey.

Crew has pulled off an amazing feat to win his club's in-house competition for a second successive year - but the father of two has revealed he's not surprised after going back to the drawing board following the disappointment of last year's regional final.

"After I played in last year's event my form went downhill so I have spent the winter changing my swing," said Crew, who has seen his handicap fall from 22 last year to 16.5.

"It's still work in progress but it's working for me and it was no surprise to me when I won. I still had to go out and win the medal but I do love playing medals and won by three shots.

"This is my dream and why I have worked so hard, with Charles' support, going out in all weathers.

"I'm looking forward to going back and making amends because we lost on countback and I know Charles also lost on countback a few years earlier.

"I'm also looking forward to returning because it was such a great day last year, regardless of the outcome, and it's such a beautiful course that suits my game."
But Crew and Giddins, along with the rest of the field, will be hoping that the torrential rain that marred last year's regional final holds off.

Host pro Martyn Landsborough, who will be partnered by 52-year-old IT professional John Edwards, admitted he had never known a day like it with play halted for more than three hours.

"In all my professional life I've never known anything like it because we were out at the 12th green when play was halted," he said.

"We sat out on the course for about an hour just waiting to start again. It made me a lot more sympathetic for the tour pros when they have to come off the course and start all over again.

"It's quite hard to try and regain the momentum after that. Hopefully we'll avoid that this year and it will give everyone a fairer chance."

Landsborough will be looking to reach his first final but will face stiff competition with five previous finalists in the field.

The most recent is Worthing's Stephen Rolley, who finished one shot behind the eventual winners in Turkey last December when partnered by Adam Henty.
This time Rolley teams up with 17 handicapper Ian Potter, a 46-year-old careworker.

Also bidding to reach a second grand final are Andrew Jones (Littlestone), David Ledingham (Herne Bay), Peter Parks (Hever Castle) and European Seniors Tour player Glenn Ralph (Camberley Heath).

The most eye-catching name in the field is Kevin Keegan - not the Newcastle manager but 32-year-old credit manager from Crawley, who will partner Tilgate Forest professional Dan Lucking.

Other teams in the field include Brighton & Hove, Gillingham, Wimbledon Common, Sheerness, Devil's Dyke, Royal Eastbourne and St Clere's Hall.

The tournament, which attracts more than 100,000 entries, is now its 24th staging and has been held in Portugal, Spain, Grand Bahamas and Sardinia prior to Turkey last year.

This year's grand final, played over the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club, has a professional prize fund of £30,000 and is being played from November 30 to December 4.
