Woodman Races To Victory

Published in:

Berkshire's Guy Woodman carded a six-under-par 63 to win the South Region qualifier of the Powerade PGA Assistants' Championship, in association with FootJoy.

Woodman, a former star of reality television show Big Break IV, raced into a healthy lead over his front nine after starting birdie-par-eagle at Betchworth Park near Dorking.

The East Berkshire Golf Club assistant professional turned in a six-under 29 and then came home in level par.

That finish frustrated the 30-year-old but he was surprised by the margin of victory.

"It was a bit disappointing because I got off to a really good start," said Woodman, who is playing in this event for the first time having just started as an assistant.

"I played a practice round the day before and I felt confident I could shoot under par but I did not set myself a target and just took every shot as it came.

"I was surprised to win by six in a field of 80 as the course was quite generous and we were lucky with the weather."

Woodman, who shot to fame in 2005 on the Golf Channel's reality show which featured a European team against their American counterparts, has been trying to break on to the European Tour in the last few years and still harbours ambitions to get there. "I'm still trying to keep my goal alive," he added.

"But with no sponsors and no money I had to move back home but I'd still like to go to Tour school every year.

"But working 30 hours a week has been quite a good distraction as I have something else to think about apart from playing and practising."

Woodman's score comfortably surpassed the next best set by Ifield's Ryan Fenwick, winner of the qualifier last year, who could manage only a level-par 69, with Mark Wilkinson, of West Malling, third on 70.

With 19 places available for the final at The London Club in August it required an eight-way play-off to decide the final seven slots. James Craven-Bartle (Hoebridge Golf Centre) was the unfortunate player to miss out on the first extra hole.
