Duo Out To Get Their Revenge

Published in:

Two East Anglian golfers have the bit between their teeth as they bid to erase the bitter memory of missing out on last year's PGA National Pro-Am Championship Grand Final.

Martin Elsworthy, of Lowestoft's Rookery Park Golf Club and John Reynolds of King's Lynn Golf Club both lost out on a shot at the title of Europe's biggest pro-am and an all expenses trip to Turkey on countback in the regional qualifier at King's Lynn.

But a year on and the two PGA golf professionals have another chance to reach this year's final as King's Lynn again plays host on Wednesday May 14 to more than 60 pairs from across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Essex, with the winning team heading to Turkey and the Sirene Beach & Hotel Resort and Antalya Golf Club.

Host pro Reynolds, 52, will be joined by Brian Burchall (17 handicap) as he finally looks to reach the final having been a runner-up in the qualifier on no less than FOUR occasions - including last year.

"I take the positives out those results - given I've been so close," said Reynolds.
"People try and make out that we should do well as we have home advantage and while obviously we do, there's also a bit of extra pressure because we are at home.

"I'm looking forward to giving it another go and it would be nice to win, although I play very seldom as I've just taken on the role of general manager as well as being the professional."

King's Lynn's tight tree-lined track will certainly prove a test for the assembled field, with much resting on how the amateurs manage to steer their way through.

"Because there are two scores to consider one player can't win it on their own," added Reynolds.

"It has to be a team effort and the amateur has a big part to play, but it's a matter of how they cope with the pressure and deal with it out on the course, which is very tight but also in the best condition I've seen it in for this time of year."

Fifty-year-old Elsworthy, who will be joined by nine handicapper Nick Barrett, is eager to take on King's Lynn again after the heartbreak of last year with Jason Hipperson.

"We were one of the last groups out and we knew what score we had to beat as we came through the halfway point," said Elsworthy.

"We were a shot ahead with two to play but dropped a shot on the 17th and parred the last - losing out on the countback.

"We had a real good chance and then lost it on the last couple of holes and though it was one of those things, it was hard to take and a real kick in the teeth as it really is a great prize. I think we felt the pressure but I have to say my partner definitely kept us in it.

"I'm going back this year with Nick, who's a good friend of Jason's, and it's great that he's got a chance to make amends."

But neither are likely to have things their own way with last year's winner Paul Wilby of Fynn Valley looking to emulate his success when he teams up with Tom Miller, who plays off 17.

Also in the field is Elton Furze pro Glyn Krause, who tied eighth in the 2006 Grand Final in Portugal, Stock Brook Manor's Craig Laurence, who also played in the 2006 Grand Final, and Rushmere's Kelvin Vince, who qualified for the 2005 final but missed it is as his wife went into labour early.

Krause will be joined by a greenkeeper for the second year in a row, with 24-year-old scratch handicapper Jamie Hibbert, who works at Peterborough Milton, joining him.
But in what will be a private duel, fellow greenkeeper and eight handicapper Mick Turner of Suffolk Golf & County Club will be looking to come out on top when he teams up with pro Stephen Hall.

Other clubs lining up at King's Lynn include Colchester, Ely City, Great Yarmouth & Caister, Thetford, Royal Cromer and March.

The tournament, which attracts more than 100,000 entries, is now in its 24th staging and has been held in Portugal, Spain, Grand Bahamas and Sardinia prior to Turkey last year.

This year's grand final, played over the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club, has a professional prize fund of £30,000 and is being played from November 30 to December 4.
