Stunned Amateur Guides Ashbourne Aces To Turkish Delight

Published in:

Ashbourne pro John Dwyer put himself in the frame for another piece of silverware after he and amateur partner Shane O'Brien booked themselves a trip to Turkey and a grand final spot in Europe's biggest pro-am.

A stunning finish of four birdies in the final five holes over the testing Baltray links of County Louth, catapulted the duo to a two-shot victory in the PGA National Pro-Am Championship Irish regional final.

The quartet of scores blasted Dwyer and his nine handicap partner to a seven under par tally of 65, with Headfort professional Brendan McGovern and Patrick Duffy claiming second spot with a round of 67.

Dwyer and O'Brien can now look forward to a luxury five star trip to the 36-hole final, which is being staged at Turkey's Antalya Golf Club in November, which caught O'Brien totally by surprise.

"He doesn't know about that yet," said Dwyer, minutes after finishing his round. "Shane isn't aware there's another stage to the competition and a trip to Turkey so he's going to be delighted when he hears the news."

Dwyer, who will compete alongside the cream of world golf at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth later this month following his success in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship last summer, was equally happy to have made his first grand final and hailed the prowess of his partner O'Brien, a 41-year-old civil servant, for securing their place in the grand final.

"I'm looking forward to the grand final as I've always heard good things about the week from other people," said the 34-year-old, who will also be competing for a share of the £30,000 prize fund.

"I've been third or fourth in qualifying and didn't think we'd done enough this time as I thought we'd be a couple of shots light.

"But we got to the 16th and saw we were top of the leaderboard, which I just could not believe.

"All day long I thought eight to ten under would be the target but thankfully my guy was playing really well, while I wasn't on top form."

The pair notched up eight birdies - four either side of the turn - with their only blemish coming at the 10th.

O'Brien weighed in with three on the front nine before the duo combined on the home straight to clinch victory.

"We both bogeyed the 10th and we struggled a bit after that until we both came in with those four birdies. I came in at 14 and 18 with Shane getting scores at 15 and 16 and he was unlucky not get another at the par three 17th.

"But he played well all day and got a great birdie at the 7th and the day very much belonged to him and now I'm happy just to give him the good news."

Lisburn's Stephen Hamill and Bill Murphy shot a four under par 68 to share third spot with Fota Island's Kevin Morris and Paul Hughes.

The winning pair will compete against 15 other regional finalists during the five-day five-star trip to the Sirene Beach & Hotel Resort on the shores of Turkey's Mediterranean Coast from November 30 to December 4.

The tournament, which attracts more than 100,000 entries, is now in its 24th staging and has been held in Portugal, Spain, Grand Bahamas and Sardinia prior to Turkey last year.
