England Coach Chases European Final Place

Published in:

A jet-setting golf coach is hoping to add Turkey to his list of destinations by winning the regional qualifier of Europe's largest pro-am next week.

Wyboston Lakes professional Paul Ashwell, lead coach to the England under-18 team, will join up with club champion Jason Haywood at Hertfordshire's Old Fold Manor on Friday, May 16 in the PGA National Pro-Am Championship.

It is one of 16 regional finals across Great Britain & Ireland with each winning pair securing an all expenses trip to the grand final, which is being held at the Sirene Beach & Hotel Resort and Antalya Golf Club.

Ireland, Japan and Slovenia are already on Ashwell's itinerary this year with the national squad and a trip to Turkey at the end of the year wouldn't go amiss - having missed last year's qualifier through injury.

"I didn't play as a I had a serious back problem that required surgery and it's only now that I'm really getting back into playing," said Ashwell, who is rated one of the country's top 25 coaches by Golf Monthly.

"I've played in previous years and done OK but I've never qualified for the final so maybe this will be the first year."

He will be aided by 37-year-old Haywood, who Ashwell believes will serve him well when the pressure mounts with more 35 teams trying to secure that one spot.

"Though I'm a specialist coach, you can't try and give too much technical advice once you're out there in the heat of the battle," he said.

"It's more about psychological support and giving your partner a boost in confidence or to help with things like club selection or reading the greens. That's about it."

However, Ashwell believes that his services won't be called on too much given Haywood plays off three.

"He's a low handicapper and the current club champion so I'm looking forward to playing with him," said Ashwell.

"He won't have many shots but I think at his level he knows how to play the game and will be more experienced at handling the pressure than a mid to high handicapper, who can get a bit anxious on big occasions."

Another pro with a string to his bow off the course and looking to land top spot is Haverhill's Nick Duc, who finished one shot off victory at last year's qualifier.

Duc, who has been training as an equipment tutor for the PGA, returns to Old Fold Manor with 61-year-old amateur partner Gordon Price, who plays off 10, looking to turn his good form in the event into winning form.

"I've got quite a good record as I've finished in the top ten in the last five or six years, so hopefully this will be the year," said Duc.

"But that will come down a lot to who your partner is and how they play on the day. You hope they don't get fazed by the whole thing and that they take their opportunities and the pro also holes a few on the day.

"I know Gordon quite well and he's a very steady player, while this will be one of the few occasions in the year I actually get out on the course and compete.

"With training to be a tutor, running the business and teaching there isn't a lot of time to get out and play."

While both professionals will be bidding to reach their first final, Hadley Wood pro Alastair Archibald will be going for his third grand final appearance after qualifying in 1999 and 2000.

Also in the field are Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs), Maurice Campbell (Leighton Buzzard), Richard May (Welwyn Garden City), Mark Foreman (Mid Kent), Tony Sheaff (Hampstead) and host pro Peter McEvoy.

The tournament, which attracts more than 100,000 entries, is now in its 24th staging and has been held in Portugal, Spain, Grand Bahamas and Sardinia prior to Turkey last year.

This year's grand final, played over the PGA Sultan course at Antalya Golf Club, has a professional prize fund of £30,000 and is being played from November 30 to December 4.
