Dougherty Supports Leigh Pro’s Longest Day

Published in:

Ryder Cup prospect Nick Dougherty is backing PGA North Region professional Andrew Baguley and three members from his club Leigh - Peter Bean, Steve Dagger and Paul Sherwood - who are taking part in Macmillan's Longest Day Challenge to help people living with cancer. They will tee-off on June 23 at the Lancashire club where they hope to raise more than £5,000 in sponsorship for the cancer care charity by playing four rounds in one day.

Team member Peter Bean said: "We wanted to take on the challenge and help Macmillan Cancer Support because my mum was diagnosed with the disease in 2006 and she has received fantastic support from the organisation.

"It will be no easy feat but we'll be spurred on knowing every single hole will be helping people living with cancer."

The top four teams from across the UK - calculated through combined scoring and fundraising totals - will go on to compete for the Longest Day Golf Challenge Trophy at Parque De Floresta, Western Algarve, Portugal on October 12-14 courtesy of Vigia Resorts, Parque De Floresta, Today's Golfer and Golf World.

Teams that raise £1,000 or more in sponsorship will also be entered into a prize draw to win a personal golf clinic and nine holes for three players with 2007 Alfred Dunhill Links Champion Dougherty at Wentworth.

Dougherty, whose mum Ennis survived cancer two years ago but died earlier this month after a heart attack, is supporting the event for the second year, added: "We've all been touched by cancer in some way, either personally or through friends and family.

"Macmillan's Longest Day Golf Challenge is the perfect excuse to have a fun golfing day while raising money for the cause."
