John Dwyer is one of the most consistent players in the Irish Region. He's a former PGA Ulster Champion and ex-leader of the Irish Order of Merit.
However, his win last year in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship, that qualifies him for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, was probably his greatest achievement to date.
"I will always remember winning the Ulster Championship at The Hilton Templepatrick as it was my first ever win in an all-pro event but winning the Glenmuir was certainly a highlight of my career," says 34-year-old Dwyer, the head pro at Ashbourne Golf Club, Co Meath.
Last season, Dwyer finished fourteenth in the regional Order of Merit, having played 28 ranking tournaments and having 14 top four finishes, including five top podium finishes. He also had a reasonable high finish a few years ago in the Smurfit European Championship at The K Club, Straffan, Co Kildare, a championship in which he made the cut twice.
Dwyer, like all club professionals in the Irish Region, splits his time between tending to the needs of the Ashbourne Club members, teaching and playing the circuit himself.
Golf wasn't always Dwyer's only sporting love. It was really a toss-up between horse racing and golf as his brother Mark, a former leading jockey and now a respected trainer, was very much into the horsey world when John was in his teenage days.
"I tried riding horses but after falling off a few times I decided that golf was a better option," cracks Dwyer. Now he's very glad that he chose that course. It has paid dividends for him.
He has played Wentworth twice before and will not be in awe of the place.
"I played in the BMW on two occasions, in 2002 after winning the Irish Order of Merit the previous season and in 2003 after being second in Ireland the year before. At that time, the top two in the regional Order of Merit got an invitation.
"I also went over a few weeks ago to get another look at the course see the bunker work that Ernie Els has done to the place."
Dwyer limbers up for his Wentworth test by playing on Monday and Tuesday in the €50,000 Quinn Insurance Charity Trophy at Slieve Russell, Co Cavan. Mark Staunton has opted out of that event to arrive early at Wentworth.
"I felt that I needed some competitive golf before the BMW as our season here has not warmed up yet. Slieve Russell's always a good test and the field is strong," explains Dwyer.
