Devon assistant professionals Daniel Wood (Royal North Devon) and Mark Taylor (Exeter) achieved their greatest golfing success in winning the White Hart Hotel betterball at Launceston.
They beat former winners Martyn Thompson (Parkstone) and Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) by one shot after a nerve-jangling final round when the outcome rested on the final putt.
Taylor, now in his second year of training with Gary Milne, hit the front of the par-five 18th in two and knew he needed two putts for victory. His first putt finished short, but then he calmly stroked in a five-footer to earn the pair £900 each.
They led by two after an eight-under 62 on the opening day, thanks to a lightening start. They shot birdies at the first and third and an eagle at the second when Wood pitched in.
They consolidated their lead in the second round and a birdie at the tenth brought a three-shot advantage before they dropped shots at the 11th and 17th to set up the exciting climax.
West Region captain Tony Pitts, playing with his St Austell assistant Russell Binney, finished third, each earning £500.
Pitts said: "Being captain has offered me a wonderful chance to play more regularly on some great courses and it's certainly helped my game."
Tony Nash, now working at Porthpean, and Richard Sadler, the Cornwall county team coach and serial winner in the Cornwall Alliance, looked to be the dream team.
And they should have won after making seven birdies on the first eight holes in the second round- only missing out on a par five - to move into the lead. But both took six on the 150-yard ninth to fall back and eventually shared in a six-way tie for fourth.
