Home assistant Joe Folker had just teed off as the penultimate player in the 29-team Radyr pro-am when the players were called in because of flooded greens.
And an hour later, after diligent work by head greenkeeper Julian Doughty and West Region tournament organiser Andy Holding to squeegee the greens, the 14th in particular, the day was abandoned.
"I have never worked so hard physically since I left the Marines," said Holding. "The course was in great condition but rain the previous night followed by persistent rain all day meant we were always fighting a losing battle."
Head pro Simon Swales, who completed 17 holes, said: "It was a nightmare and such a shame because we had such a strong field including Sion Bebb, Andrew Sherborne and Stuart Little."
The event has been re-scheduled for Friday September 19.
