Pairs Book Final Place After Monster Play-Off

Published in:

There was a late finish at the North Region qualifier for the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Sunderland, as a 10-way play-off was finally concluded just before 10pm.

The large group, who had all finished tied on five-under 65 at Woodsome Hall in Huddersfield, teed off at 7.45pm but it took six extra holes in the better ball format before the seven qualifiers were decided.

Those who made it through were Simon Edwards (Clays) and Paul Carman (Huddersfield), Vincent Guest (Teesside) and Graeme Bell (Eaglescliffe), Andrew Turner (Knaresborough) and Andrew Stevenson (Mersey Valley), William Crellin (Tim Jenkins Golf Ltd) and Jonathan Lupton (Middlesbrough), Nicholas Baron (Seddiner See) and Steven Holden (True Fit Golf), Richard Masters (Baildon) and David Delaney (Halifax Ogden) and Colin Maroney (Harwood) and Sean Owen (Bolton Old Links).

The unlucky three to miss out in the gloom were Philip Boag and Danny Walsh (Garforth Golf Range), Joe Senior (Heysham) and Steve Parry (Astley Village Golf Range) and Julian Haworth and Lee Shepherd (Willow Valley).

Winners of the event, who finished a long time before the play-off got under way, was the pairing of Martyn Hamer (Ellesmere) and Nick Sargent (Eastham Lodge) with an impressive 12-under-par 58. That included a back nine of just 27 from Hamer.

David Brunton (Ringway) and Jonathan Cheetham (Gatley) were second in the qualifier on eight under with Mark Bradley (Chorley) and Paul Walker (Knott End) a further stroke behind.

In a share of fourth on six under were John Cheetham (Marriott Worsley Park) and James Barr (Chilli Dip Golf Academy), Mike Bradley (Notts) and Stuart Betteridge (Kilton Forest) and David Shacklady (Mossock Hall) and Gary Donnison (Mobberley).

For Cheetham even a last-minute change of playing partner could not prevent him from reaching the final.

The 24-year-old discovered earlier this week that regular playing partner Simon Shepherd could not attend through injury.

Having been at Open final qualifying on Monday and Tuesday it was a rush to track down a new partner in time to play at the North Region qualifier at Woodsome Hall in Huddersfield.

That turned out to be Barr, an old friend based in Bolton.

The pair took a while to get going but went on a scoring spree mid-round - in an almost exact repeat of Cheetham and Shepherd did last year - with five in six holes from the sixth.

From that point it was just a case of not throwing things away and despite a bogey they had further birdies on 15 and 18 for a six-under-par 64 - which was just one inside the qualifying mark.

"I found out Simon (with whom he played at university) was injured so I made a quick call to James, who I have known since juniors, and he agreed to come along," said Cheetham.

"We started off steadily but then had five birdies in six holes and that was nice to get to five under after 11."

For Shacklady, making the final was some consolation after missing out on Open qualification on Tuesday in a play-off.

"It is good to get to a final - that is the important thing," said the 41-year-old.

"I lost a play-off at Local Final Qualifying for the Open so getting out and playing golf stops me dwelling on it; I played yesterday and today."

Playing partner Donnison, 32, added: "We didn't drop any shots today, we just had six birdies and 12 pars.

"We didn't think it was a great score but with the conditions, windy in the morning and rain in the afternoon, it wasn't bad."
