Duo Seek Second Success

Published in:

Former champions Barry Hurt and Phil Edwards have ambitions to regain their title in the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Sunderland, but first they must get through qualifying.

The pair were winners in 2006 and so were exempt from qualifying last year, but their defence did not go to plan as they missed the cut at Fulford Golf Club near York.

They will team up again at Stapleford Park on Wednesday July 23 alongside 51 other pairs all looking to make the final.

Hurt, of Bulwell Golf Club, knows it will not be easy, but having won the tournament once before it is even more important he and Notts GC pro Edwards to well.

"We'll give it another bash this year. We slipped up in the final last year and made the cut but we didn't play great," he said.

"You always want to do well in anything you have won before."

Fellow Nottinghamshire professional Craig Swinburn is once again resuming his partnership with Paul Bradshaw (Ramsdale Park).

The pair, who also regularly plays in the annual Sunningdale Foursomes, finished just outside the top 10 in last year's final and would dearly like to improve on that.

"We didn't have a good last round as the birdies dried up. We were a bit disappointed by how we finished," said Swinburn, of Notts GC.

"Hopefully we can get through this year. We enjoyed Fulford."

With the emphasis on posting as low a score as possible to ensure straightforward qualification the pair plan to attack the Stapleford Park course - which they covered in seven under to be joint winners of the qualifier 12 months ago - from the off.

"We have just got to go for it from the word go. The first hole is driveable and if you don't make three you feel you have dropped a shot," added Swinburn, 32.

"We are playing with Daniel Greenwood (Forest Pines) and Stephen Bennett (Waltham Windmill) who we know quite well.

"Daniel makes birdies for fun and Steve is the same but there's little bit less pressure on you if there is two of you are going at the hole all the time.

"I think we are both looking forward to it."
