Pairs Aim To Be Back In Final

Published in:

Injuries played a key part for two of the five pairs who qualified for last year's final of the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball championship, in association with Sunderland - which means they are more determined to book a return.

County Offaly's Kevin McGrath and 32-year-old partner David Mortimer (GUI National Academy) were tied for sixth heading into the last round at Fulford but had to pull out after the latter sustained a back injury.

But at least they got to the final, Athenry's Michael Mulryan developed a back problem prior to the event forcing him and partner Dara Ford (County Sligo) to pull out.

Understandably both are keen to do themselves justice by securing a return to the York venue, with the qualifier taking place at Headfort on July 29.

"We had to pull out after the second round because Dave had a back injury," said McGrath, the PGA professional at Birr.

"It was really disappointing. We had played well and then he hurt his back coming down the back nine and we couldn't play the following day."

It was especially disappointing as the two previous years the pair failed to make the cut in the final, once by just one stroke.

However, the pair are good friends and aim to put things right this time around, although McGrath has already checked on the health of his partner, a back-to-back winner of the Irish PGA Championship in 2005 and 2006.

"He's fighting fit and ready this time," said the 28-year-old, who has been at Birr three years.

"David's a very strong and consistent player and he gives me a bit of confidence.

"Our games are quite similar, we know each other's game, so it works quite well for us.

"We are keen to get moving and hopefully it will be third time lucky."

It was a similarly disappointing for Athenry's Mulryan and Ford last year.

The pair had finished joint second in the qualifier but were ultimately denied their place in the final.

"We couldn't go because I had to pull out because I was injured. I had a problem with my back," explained Mulryan, who struck up a friendship with Ford while the pair were training.

"We were really looking forward to it."
