Former European Tour professional Andrew Sherborne returns to York next week for the final of the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Sunderland, looking to make up for missed opportunities.
The Bristol-based golfer and Salisbury pro David Hutton were runners-up in the better ball tournament at Fulford Golf Club 12 months ago after a weak finish cost them a chance of victory.
But having qualified to return for another shot the pair are determined not to leave anything out on the course this time around.
"Last year we played the last few holes not as well as we should have," admitted Sherborne, of The Kendleshire, ahead of the tournament which starts on October 1.
"We had it under control and then Mat Morris (half of the eventual winning partnership) had a really good finish.
"We had our chances all the same but he played well over those last five holes.
"They took their chances and deserved it. We didn't take our chances and that is the difference between winning and coming second."
Sherborne does not get much time to practice with his partner, who is based at Hamptworth, but whenever they tee it up together they just seem to gel.
However, the 47-year-old is playing down their chances of victory.
"There is no point in saying we are going back to go and win it. You can't go out and make a plan in fourball better ball apart from who is going to tee off on each hole," he added.
"I think anyone can win fourball better ball. You don't have to necessarily play well, you just have to make a few birdies when your partner is not making them and vice-versa.
"It is no good both of you shooting four under, birdieing the same four holes and parring the others.
"We are looking to make a birdie as soon as we get on the course but it is also about going out and playing your own game.
"If the putts go in great."
Although Morris and Adrian Carey are not present to defend their title in the £30,000 54-hole event after a change in their playing categories there are a number of former champions in the field.
Among those are 2005 winners Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) and Martyn Thompson (Parkstone).
Other representatives from the west region include Woolacombe and Ilfracombe's Andrew Norman and Chris Gill, of Exeter, who won the qualifier at North Wilts last month.
