Pros Hope To Put Working Relationship To Good Use

Published in:

Suffolk professional Simon Dainty hopes his close working relationship with partner Paul Wilby will pay off when they take to the course for the final of the SkyCaddie PGA Fourball Championship, supported by Sunderland, next month.

Up until a couple of weeks ago Wilby was Dainty's boss at Fynn Valley Golf Club near Ipswich.

Wilby has since moved on to Haverhill near Cambridge with Dainty promoted from head professional to become director of golf.

But having finished second in the qualifier at Bush Hill Park in June the pair will be looking to maintain their form in the final at Fulford near York when the tournament begins on October 1.

"It's always nice to play with Paul and we are both quite excited," said Dainty, who is recovering from a wrist injury sustained last week.

"We both know each other's games and we gel quite nicely. We have been friends for years.

"We bounce off each other really well and we will drag each other through.

"We shall go for a practice round on Tuesday and then go rip round Wednesday and Thursday.

"It helps to get off to a good start but, as the old saying goes, you can't win it in the first round but you can lose it.

"But I never go out there with the ambition of not winning. We will go out, do what we can do and see where we end up."

Essex duo Jason Levermore and Andrew Pestell, winners of this year's regional qualifier, are looking to improve on last year's visit to the final when they finished 11th.

They had a difficult choice to make as they were also due to play in the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh National PGA Championship which was rescheduled for next week after being rained off last month.

"It is a shame it clashes with the Welsh National. We had to make a choice between the better ball or that and we both decided to go back to Fulford because we are looking forward to it so much," said Levermore, of Clacton.

"The season is going well. I'm playing well at the moment and we are quite confident of doing well."

Levermore said they had learned lessons from last year and he and his partner, from Chelmsford, now had a pre-planned target for the £30,000 56-hole event.

"We got off to a very slow start last year. We didn't really birdie any of the par fives," added the 29-year-old.

"Scoring is always going to be good and it is all about attacking everywhere and making sure one of you is attacking and one of you is in play.

"We were annoyed last year because we should have done better and we were a bit disappointed with the par fives.

"There are 12 par fives for three rounds and we were two under for them for three rounds."

Other qualifiers include Alex White (Tilsworth) and Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs), Matthew Stables (Parpost) and Steve Cipa and Andrew Clapp (Brickendon Grange) and Peter Cherry (Ashridge).
