Trevor Jones joined Welsh greats Ian Woosnam, Phillip Price and Brian Huggett by adding his name to the list of prestigious winners of the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh National PGA Championship.
The 25-year-old, who has just completed his PGA-accredited Applied Golf Management Studies at Birmingham University, began the final round with a two-shot cushion over the field and maintained that advantage to claim victory at Cardiff over Parc Golf Academy's Richard Dinsdale, who made a late charge as he attempted to add to his 1999 triumph.
But Jones, Hambrook Golf Range in Bristol, was always in charge of the trophy's destiny and the £6,150 winner's cheque as he posted a final round 69 to finish at one-under-par 209 for the week - the only player in the field to finish under par - with Dinsdale's 68 leaving him one-over for the tournament.
Jones, who also won the assistants' title in the process, was ecstatic to have also secured a place at Wales Open at Celtic Manor next year.
"This is definitely the best feeling," he said.
"The thing I really wanted was to get into the Wales Open next year and I'm just absolutely over the moon to have achieved that.
"It's a great way to start my professional career as apart from getting you noticed and bringing a bit of sponsorship, it's massive for the confidence to have held off such a strong field."
Jones went out in 33, a double bogey on the third halving his gains on the front nine, as he eased to two-under-par and a four-shot advantage. He added another birdie at 11 but dropped shots at 13 and 14 added spice to proceedings with Dinsdale ripping up the back nine.
Dinsdale, three shots behind the leader at the start of the day, had a slow start made worse by dropped shots at the 6th and 8th, before signs of recovery with a birdie at the ninth.
He struck again three times in the next four holes, a bogey in between blotting the card. Dinsdale sunk his final birdie at 16 to see the leader's advantage reduced to two and was aware he needed another at the par 3 18th to move within a shot of the leader and apply some pressure.
Despite just coming up short, Dinsdale admitted the damage had been done much earlier in the week with opening rounds of 70 and 73.
"I had a good finish but I struggled all week to be honest," he said.
"I was playing well coming into the tournament but struggled the first couple of days and the first nine today as I was two over after eight. But I had a real good back nine so it was a good effort in the end.
"I missed a putt at the last and I felt if I could just get that in I could put the pressure on him a little bit, but fair dues to him, he did very well."
James Lee (Caerphilly) and Lee Rooke (Vale of Llangollen) tied for third at three-over-par after both carded 69s.
The tournament was also the culmination of the Wales Order of Merit, which would decide the three Welsh team members for the PGAs of Europe International Team Championships in Spain next month.
Dinsdale claimed the first spot via his second-place finish with Matthew Griffiths (Oakdale) and Andrew Barnett (North Wales Golf Range), the top two on the OOM, making the side.
Pontypool's Glyn Davies claimed the Welsh Senior title.
