Learner Driver

15 June, 2009 | The PGA

PGA.info has tapped into its pool of pros to answer all your golfing questions - from technique and instruction through to fitness and the rules.

This week's question on ways of increasing driver distance off the tee is answered by Kevin Flynn - a PGA professional at Tournerbury Golf Centre on Hayling Island in Hampshire.

Have you got any advice on how I can get more distance off the tee with my driver?

Kevin says:

Firstly I would like to take a look at your driver and make sure the shaft suits your swing speed and also check the loft to make sure we are getting the full potential from your driver. More and more golfers are recognising the benefits of custom-fitting clubs to match their physiques and the correct shaft and loft can make a significant difference to how far the ball is hit.

Next if I saw that you were not completing your turn on the backswing maybe due to flexibility, I would suggest turning your right foot out- just this will allow you to turn more on the backswing and will help create a wider arc in the swing.

I would also see if you are shifting your weight correctly on the downswing. In order to get maximum distance from the tee it is essential that the weight is shifted correctly in the downswing. By opening up your left toes you will produce a much better turn through the ball and the weight will shift on to the left foot.
