Government funding for businesses in England (January 21)

Details have been announced today (21st January) for The Closed Businesses Lockdown Payment (CBLP) which supports businesses that have been required to close due to the national restrictions that began on 5th January 2021.

It is aimed at businesses which are required to pay business rates, for example non-essential retail, leisure, personal care, sports facilities, tourism and hospitality businesses.

It may be of relevance to some Members of The PGA whose businesses meet the criteria. Applications are made through local councils.

Information on the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) were also updated on 21st January. While there were no substantive changes in the grant details, it is worth noting that local councils have been provided with funding to support affected local businesses by way of grants.

Local councils have discretion on which businesses are eligible for ARG support and the levels of the grant funding available, while the general government guidance is that the funding is to help those businesses which – whether or not legally forced to close – are severely impacted by the restrictions.

These could include:

  • businesses which supply the retail, hospitality, and leisure sectors
  • businesses in the tourism and events sectors
  • business required to close but which do not pay business rates

PGA Members in England whose businesses meet the above indicative criteria may want to apply for funding through their local council, noting that eligibility will be at the discretion of individual local authorities.
