In only its second year the 3 Ws Pro-Am and The PGA in Surrey Annual Dinner was blessed with sunshine that beamed down on three sets of winners at some of the country’s finest courses.
The brain child of The PGA in Surrey Chairman and West Hill head professional, Guy Shoesmith the 3 Ws Pro-Am, which takes place at West Hill, Worplesdon and Woking, was conceived with the aim of raising enough funds to get some more professional events back into the schedule.
Boosted by the additional support from some new sponsors, The Superstroke PGA Surrey Assistants Championship will be played at Wildwood GC on the 22nd July, and the Sun Mountain PGA in Surrey Masters will be played at Woodcote Park GC in September.
In terms of the pro-am itself, the PGA Professionals that brought home the winning teams for the 3 Ws Pro-Am were James Jones (Tonbridge) at Worplesdon with 91 points, James Winstanley (Burhill, above) at Woking with 85 and Chris Evans (Tandridge) with 86. The Three Ws Pro-Am day was rounded off with the celebratory The PGA in Surrey Annual Awards Dinner held in the Grandstand at Epsom Downs Racecourse.
As the one who found himself holding the microphone at the end of the prize giving, Evans made a great job of the thank you speech, revealing that when it came to his team of amateurs from demolition experts Woolridge off scratch, eight and 18 handicaps respectively, he couldn’t tell the difference on the day between their performances!
The PGA in Surrey 2014 tournament schedule comprises 21 events to date, with the Pro-Am highlights being those at West Hill on the 27th June, Hindhead on 6th August and Hankley Common on 19th September. The other major tournaments are The PGA in Surrey Championship at Cuddington on 28th August and The PGA in Surrey Senior and Super Senior Championship at a new venue, Reigate Heath GC, one of the UK’s oldest and best nine-hole courses, on 22nd September.
