Phil Abbott (John O’Gaunt) shrugged of an opening bogey to fire a four-under-par 66 – and clinch the Dunstable Downs Pro-Am by a shot.
Abbott was first out on the opening par-five but dropped a stroke against the card. That proved to be a small blip, though, as he responded with three birdies to turn for home at two-under.
Things got even better for him as he picked up a stroke on three straight holes from the 12th. And a bogey five at the 16th wasn’t enough to prevent him from finishing out in front.
Home professional Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs) shot 67 to finish alongside Noel Quinn (Whipsnade Park) in a tie for second.
A day earlier, the Weston Homes Royal Cromer Pro-Am saw a trio of golfers share the spoils. Ian Ellis (Great Yarmouth & Caister), Caroline Grady (Dunston Hall) and James Ruebotham (Welwyn Garden City) all signed for respective two-under rounds of 70.
It would have been a two-way tie but Ellis birdied the closing par-four. Glen Portelli (Verulam), who won the Order of Merit event over the two previous days at Royal Cromer, shot 71 as did James Mynott (St Ives) with both finishing tied-fourth.
