Phil Abbott (John O’Gaunt) hit the birdie trail early as he sped to success at the Pavenham Park 20th Anniversary Pro-Am.
With a shotgun start in effect, Abbott began at the first and it wasn’t long before he clicked into gear.
He birdied the par-three third to trigger a superb scoring streak that left him four-under-par after six holes.
Abbott played the outward nine in just 31 after picking up another shot at the ninth. There was also a further birdie at the 12th before his only bogey on the card arrived at the final hole.
However, that slip-up didn’t derail his victory bid with his five-under-par 67 proving too good for his rivals, the nearest of whom were Kevin Harrison (A1 Golf Driving Range) and Paul Hetherington (Great Hadham Golf & Country Club). The pair signed for rounds of 69, one ahead of fourth-placed James Tavener (Hendon).
Hetherington, the 2014 captain for the PGA in England (East), was in charge of the successful team, whose winning total was 129.
