Aberdeenshire duo Greig Hutcheon and Scott Henderson were rewarded for pairing up for the first time by winning the Golfbreaks PGA Fourball Championship Scottish qualifier and booking their place in the final.
Hutcheon, of Torphins Golf Club, and Henderson (above), representing Kings Links Golf Centre, boast an impressive golfing pedigree.
Hutcheon holed the winning putt in the 2017 PGA Cup and is a two-time PGA Play-Offs winner; Henderson was the European Tour’s Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 1997.
All of which was in evidence as they carded an eight-under-par round of 62 to win the qualifier at Falkirk Tryst Golf Club.
The pair finished one shot ahead of Scott Grant (Panmure Golf Club) and Cameron West (Fairmont St Andrews); Murray Urquhart (Nairn Golf Club) and Gavin Hay (East Renfrewshire Golf Club); and the English pairing of Will Robson (Close House Golf Club) and Richard Robson-Crosby (Ponteland Golf Club).
They will join two other qualifiers at the £33,250 Golfbreaks PGA Fourball Championship final to be held at Carden Park Golf Club, Cheshire, between August 24-26.
The Falkirk event was hampered by some bad weather conditions, including a hailstorm, for around 20 minutes.
But the winning pair missed the worst of it, and a nett eagle at the seventh hole proved to be a key moment.
“That was one of my two contributions and Greig (above) tidied up the back nine nicely,” said Henderson.
“We were on the 18th hole when the hailstones arrived, so we probably got the best of the weather.
“This will be the first time either of us has played in this final. We’re good friends and go back a long way so we decided to play this event.
“Neither of us have competed in this event before. This year, Greig pretty much told me I was playing!
“The last 12 months have been difficult when you didn’t know what was around the corner, but people are coming back to golf now, it’s on the pickup and busier than ever.
“Clubs seemed to be struggling for members for years, now it seems to be going in the other direction.”
