James Ablett (teeing off on the 18th above) overcame a late scare to take victory in the 2014 Sawgrass Classic Pro-Am, beating former European Tour player Benn Barham by three shots.

The Lee-on-the-Solent pro was delighted to follow in Martin Kaymer’s footsteps, winning at the famous venue just six days after the German star secured victory in the Players’ Championship over the same course.

Ablett went into the final round of the four day event in the lead, and was cruising to victory until he found the water at the famous ‘Island Green’ at the 17th.

He then quadruple bogeyed the 18th after his first two tee shots landed in the water, leaving his hopes of victory on the brink of collapse.

Pete Dye’s masterpiece was causing difficulties throughout the field, though, and Ablett would hang on to claim victory by three shots from Benn Barham, with Phil Golding and Rusper Golf Club’s Rob McGrory tied for third.

The lead in the team event changed hands several times during the week, but Rob McGrory’s team of Bal Bains, Roger Witchlow and Alan Lucas shot a superb final round to give them victory by four shots.

The annual Sawgrass Classic Pro-Am is played on four superb courses in the Ponte Vedra Beach area with the final round at the Players Stadium Course.

The Sawgrass Classic Pro-Am is just one of several Pro-Am Tour events organised by The American Golf Holiday, others include, The Arizona Classic Pro-Am, The California Classic Pro-Am, The Scottsdale Classic Pro-Am and The Las Vegas Classic Pro-Am.
