Played at the New Forest Golf Club on the 8th and 9th of May, Martin Adams came from behind to claim his third PGA in Hampshire Match Play crown, sponsored by Be Wiser Insurance.
The Assistant Professional from Swanmore Golf Centre relished the challenge of the knockout competition, after shooting a 74 to trail the leader of the stroke play qualifying round, Sam Holloway (South Winchester), by seven shots.
Adams eventually defeated Hockley’s Gary Stubbington one up in the final, after beating Michael Lord, Ian Warwick, and in the semi-final Chris Blunden, on his way to the title.
Adams said: “Five rounds in three days is a lot of golf in a short space of time, so I’m proud of my victory. I don’t want to sound arrogant but I felt deep down I could win the tournament as the course suits me.”
He continued: “Match play allows me to relax and use my ability. With stroke play I don’t play as freely and am more reserved. It’s psychological!”
Adams was never behind against Stubbington, who had clinched his place in the final by beating Adam Reid. At one stage Adams was three up but lost the 14th and 15th before closing the match out.
