Addington Golf Club’s Paul Drew, left) and PGA pro James Marshall showed a clear pair of heels to the rest of the field by winning the Lombard Trophy regional final and booking a trip to Gleneagles.
The pair came top at Camberley Heath Golf Club in Surrey but it was a close run thing with the Addington duo carding a six under par round of 65 to tie at the top with two other teams.
They won on countback though with Marshall making a crucial birdie at the 18th hole to pip Charles Giddins and Gary Begbie (Beauport Park Golf Course) and Luke Bone and Rick Dentith (Farnham Golf Club).
Drew and Marshall will now play in the £80,000 final over the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles between September 1-2.
But Drew, who works in retail cleaning, admitted they were inspired by the scoreboard as they neared the end of their round.
“That lifted us, James said there were two teams on six under par, and we were four under at the time,” said 14-handicapper Drew.
“He said if we could get two more birdies then we’d have a good chance of winning on countback and that’s the way it turned out.”
Now the 46-year-old from Beckenham, Kent, will get the chance to play at the famous Ryder Cup venue.
“That’s going to be a little bit daunting,” he admitted.
“But I’m really going to be looking forward to it after seeing the course on television.
“It was fantastic to be playing with James and the other professionals, and great to win it.
“To be honest, I think James was quite confident we could do well.”
Marshall reached the PGA Pro-Captain Championship Final in Turkey four years ago, but this will be new territory for him.
“Paul did well to get a net eagle at the 12th and I was able to get us out of trouble when I was in the bunker at one point,” said Marshall, who will have been at Addington for two years this August after moving from Westerham Golf Club.
“It all meant we kept our spirits high and I birdied the 18th hole to get us to six under par.
“I’ve never played Gleneagles before but it’ll be a tremendous experience.”
