America complete 2019 PGA Cup team

23/05/2019

America will attempt to win back the PGA Cup from Great Britain & Ireland at Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas with a team of six rookies and four veterans.

Rich Berberian Jr, who played in the 2017 tournament, and Sean McCarty clinched their spots in the ten-man US team for the biennial international showcase for PGA Club Professionals.

The American team was determined after a two-year points system which concluded following the PGA Championship held at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.

Berberian joins Danny Balin, Stuart Deane and Bob Sowards who are all veterans, having competed in a combined six PGA Cups.

McCarty will represent his country in a PGA Cup match for the first time alongside fellow debutants Alex Beach, Jason Caron, Ben Cook, Ben Kern and Ryan Vermeer.

PGA Past President and US Captain Derek Sprague said: “I am impressed by the talent on the team. We do have six rookies, but they are proven champions in many respects. And, we have those who have won our PGA Professional Championship in Alex (Beach), Rich (Berberian Jr.), Bob (Sowards) and Ryan (Vermeer).

“Overall, I feel good about this team because of their experience. They will be very competitive this September.”

The 29th staging of the biennial PGA Cup will be played over three days from September 27-29 at Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas

The Americans lost the Llandudno International Trophy on home soil for the first time in 2015 at CordeValle in San Martin, California, and the Great Britain & Ireland team held onto the trophy two years later in 2017 with a victory at Foxhills Club & Resort.

Cameron Clark (pictured above) will captain the Great Britain & Ireland team in Texas having already experienced two victories over America, as a player in 2015 and as a vice-captain in 2017 as the home side triumphed 16-10.

David Dixon, Matthew Cort and Rob Coles have confirmed their places on the flight to Texas having filled the top three at the PGA Play-Offs tournament last year.

The Great Britain & Ireland ten-man team will be completed following the conclusion of the Titleist & FootJoy PGA Professional Championship in June.
