Brean’s Andrew March finished top of the leaderbard for the first time this season in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at Cirencester and shared success with Giuseppe Licata (Chipping Sodbury) and Somerset amateur Johnny Grace.
They shot two-under-par 68 on a day which started dry but was later marred by steady heavy rain.
March, the PGA in England and Wales (South West) chairman and also Gloucester & Somerset PGA chairman, last tasted success in six-way tie at the top in a regional medal at Weston-super-Mare 16 months ago.
He was out early so missed the worst of the weather. He collected the first of his five birdies at the fourth and added another two holes later and a third at the eighth. Further birdies followed at the short 13th and 16th.
Licata increased his lead in the Total Triumph Order of Merit with his sixth win of the season. He made three birdies but was denied outright victory when he dropped his only shot at the final hole. He is now almost 40 points clear of Ed Goodwin (Cirencester).
Mendip Spring’s Scott Thompson enjoyed his best finish of the season and he shared fourth with Newent’s birdie sweep winner Ian Brown on 69.
Goodwin and Clevedon’s Ashley Mansell were level in sixth while Goodwin collected the Over 40’s award. Previous week’s winner Russ Berry (Broadway) was eighth on 71 one ahead of PGA West Region sponsor Neil Mossman (Oake Manor), Filton’s Tom Duke and Cirencester’s assistant Mitch Caunt, making his debut.
