Doncaster-based amateur Andy Geddes admitted it was a dream come true after winning the Lombard Trophy regional final at Fulford Golf Club and booking a trip to Gleneagles.
Geddes (pictured on right), of Owston Hall Golf Club, teamed up with PGA Professional Jason Laszkowicz (left) to win by just one shot at the York venue.
The duo carded a nine-under-par round of 63 - after finishing with a birdie at the 18th hole - to pip David Hughes and Jonathan Hunt of Scarcroft Golf Club in Leeds.
Laszkowicz and Geddes will now play in the £43,600 final over the King’s Course at Gleneagles between September 2-3 - just three weeks before the Ryder Cup is held at the Scottish course.
The South Yorkshire pair made eight successive threes midway through their round - including two eagles, but they had a scare after bogeying the 16th - only to seal their place in the final with a four at the par five 18th.
Geddes, aged 45 and the manager of a Doncaster electrical company, has only been playing golf for five years.
“To win an event like this is definitely a dream come true,” he said.
“I played football to semi-professional standard and Yorkshire League cricket, but to do something like this in golf is fantastic.
“I’ve got my handicap down to 12 and now I’ll really be looking forward to playing in the final.
“Jason guided me round - all credit to him - and we did what we needed to do.
“We’d got ourselves into a good position and the birdie at the end clinched it.”
Laszkowicz said the win has put Owston Hall on the map again.
James Freeman won the PGA Assistants' Championship qualifier last month, and Laszkowicz says it is a club on the up.
“We’re going from strength to strength,” he explained.
“As well as myself and Andy’s victory adding to James’ win, we’re hosting the John Daly Pro-Am next month with John himself coming over.
“We want to get back to where we were around the year 2000 when we hosted some big events.
“I’ve played Gleneagles before and I know I’m going to enjoy the final.”
