PGA Official Supplier Asbri Golf has come a long way since Paul and Eryl Williams went into business together following a stunning round at Open venue St Andrews using their very first glove.
Paul’s sensational day at the Home of Golf with their maiden product acted as the catalyst for the birth of a company that has gone on to become Europe’s leading logo golf brand.
The duo started out with 5000 gloves to sell to family, friends and local clubs in 2003 but now stand as headline sponsors of the prestigious Welsh National PGA Championship, an event which has a rich 111 year history and this year returns to the venue where it all began, Radyr Golf Club in north Cardiff.
“I just remember Eryl presenting me with this glove that said Asbri Golf on it, and my first round happened to be during a golf trip to St Andrews,” he recalled.
“I did really well and just turned round and said ‘this glove can’t be too bad!’
“From there I had a box of them in my car and I was just travelling round the local pro shops trying to sell them – everything just snowballed from there.”
The pair, whose business has supported the championship for the last three years, are relishing two days of competitive golf in one of the oldest events on The PGA’s national tournament schedule.
Started in 1904, the tournament has been held at Radyr on five separate occasions – but has not returned to its original location since Simon Cox won the event in 1976.
Eryl, a designer by trade, is a member at Radyr and recently represented the club alongside PGA Professional Simon Swales at the Lombard Trophy where they finished in the top ten.
And he talks with pride at seeing the venue play host to the championship.
“I know how well they look after the course here, it’s always so well presented,” he said.
“The guys here were keen to have the event return and since it was announced they seem to have done nothing but prepare for it.
“The welcome for us as a local company is always amazing and we’re really pleased to be here supporting this incredible event.”
The pair also highlighted the importance of PGA Professionals to their business.
“Without the PGA Professionals our business quite simply wouldn’t be what it is today,” Paul explained.
“They supported us back in 2003 when we first started and continue to support us to this day.
“There is nothing more important to us than the PGA Professionals, this is an opportunity for us to give something back to them.”
