Baker crowned Staysure PGA Senior Championship winner

27/08/2023

Peter Baker won this year's Staysure PGA Seniors Championship by four-shots at Trump International Golf Links, Scotland.

Baker, an Honorary Member of The PGA, began his final round alongside 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell and 2010 BMW PGA Championship winner Simon Khan with a four-shot lead.

A steady level par opening nine holes in true links conditions would see Baker make the turn with a five-shot lead before making birdies on to win by six strokes.

“It’s very special to win an event like this, with all the names on this trophy it goes back a long way so to get my name on the trophy means a lot and I’m delighted.”

“I put myself in a great position after the first three days.” He said. “Today was really tough and the conditions were a lot harder, so it was a real battle for me to get it over the line but fortunately I have.”

PGA Professionals Rob Coles, Greig Hutcheon, Philip Archer and Richard O’Hanlon all finished inside the top 30 at Trump International Golf Links.

Coles (pictured), who was part of the 2017 Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team with Archer and Hutcheon, was tied for third position at the end of day one following a brilliant round of 68.

A difficult 77 followed on day two but Coles found some good form again to put himself right into contention heading into the final day thanks to a third round total of 69. A final round score of 74 saw Coles finish level par for the tournament and tied in ninth place.

Scotsman Hutcheon (pictured) finished two shots back in 13th with the highlight of his week coming on day three after shooting an impressive two-under-par.

Archer bounced back from a three-over-par opening round by shooting 71 (one-under-par) on day two. The Englishman shot three-over-par again on Saturday but moved up the leaderboard on the final day thanks to an excellent level-par-round of 72.

O’Hanlon, who is a regular on the Legends Tour, shot one-over-par on days one and two before scoring one-under-par on day three. The former PGA Midland Regional Order of Merit winner ended the tournament with a five-over-par round of 77 to finish tied 25th on +6.

Elsewhere, 2019 Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup Vice-Captain, Michael Watson finished tied 33 on nine-over-par and Welshman Liam Bond finished one shot back from Watson on 10-over-par.
