Ashley Mansell set a marker for this week’s final West Order of Merit tournament by winning the West of England Masters pro-am with an impressive six-under-par 66 at Royal North Devon.
The 24-year-old Clevedon player, who is in his first year of training, started the season by winning West Region Assistants Sprint championship. He made seven birdies and dropped just one shot over the historic links course near Bideford.
Two halves of 33 brought a one-shot success over Ross Langdon (Gloucester) who made five birdies and an eagle three at the 13th, also making two bogeys.
Late starter Lee Thompson (Dudsbury) who was preparing to win the Order of Merit this week after holding a commanding lead following the initial four events, was in a four-way tie for fourth on 68.
He joined a member of the PGA Cup winning team Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre), Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew) and Graham Howell (Ferndown Forest).
Langdon led the winning team on 89, one better than Thompson’s trio with Stuart Little (Minchinhampton) third on 87.
