Fraser Mann and David Russell were left cursing what might have been after being forced to share top spot in the Grant’s Food Seniors Autumn Fourball tournament in Edinburgh.
The duo looked favourites to take home the £400 top prize after they picked up an impressive eight birdies around the Duddingston course on Monday.
But Mann (Carnoustie Golf Links) and Russell (Archerfield Links) dropped three shots on their way to a five-under par round of 69.
That score was matched by Stephen McAllister (Stephen McAllister Golf) and Gordon Niven (Ping) who had five better-ball birdies and no bogeys, which earned both pairings £325.
Mann and Russell picked up four birdies on both the front and back nine, but their bogeys came at the second, fourth and 11th. McAllister and Niven’s bogey-free round saw them notch up birdies at the fourth, fifth, seventh, 15th and 17th.
There was a three-way tie for third place on 68 with the pairings of Neil Colquhoun (Merchants of Edinburgh) and Paul Brookes (Pitreavie), David Thomson (Carnegie Club) and Gordon Law (Uphall), and Andrew Marshall (Houston Golf Range) and Ian Taylor (Drumpellier) earning £116.67.
