There was no champagne, no hordes of fans applauding and he didn’t even witness the feat himself – but then this was the 13th ace of Stephen Bonham’s career.
However, for the retired PGA Professional, his strike at the 145-yard 17th at Caldy Golf Club did have some significance as it was his first competitive hole-in-one as came during the PGA Super 60s Championship.
Bonham, who spent the majority of his career working in Cambridgeshire but is now living in Falmouth, was partnering amateur David Walsh in the tournament.
He said: “We were on the tee discussing holes in one when I hit the seven iron, which was a good shot, and then bent down to pick my tee up. It was then I heard it had gone in the hole.
“A hole in one is one of those shots as we all try to put it in the hole.
“This was my 13th hole in one and I just seem to do it with a medium iron – nothing too long, nothing too short.
“I’ve been playing golf now for 50 years so there’s a good chance I’m going to have a few holes in one.
“None of them are too memorable but this is the first one I’ve had in competition. We were struggling hanging on to a score and that certainly helped us.”
Bonham and Walsh carded a second round seven-over-par 79 to finish in six-over for the championship.
