Bowood Golf & Country Club captain Jason Brazewell brought home the bacon to earn a place in the SkyCaddie PGA Pro-Captain Challenge final.

The host pairing of Brazewell and PGA professional Paul McLean took the honours on home turf to win the qualifying event at the Wiltshire venue with 47 points from their 11 under par round.

That earned them a trip to Morocco for the final ahead of Richard Brookman and David Stamenkovic of Cardiff’s Creigiau Golf Club who fell just one point short of Bowood.

Brazewell said he played the ‘best round of his life’ with McLean, a long time golfing partner. But he admitted his pre-competition preparations might have played a part as well.

“Before we teed off, Paul said ‘shall we go to the driving range’, I said ‘no, let’s go and get a bacon bap’. So we did that, maybe that’s the secret behind the way I played, I’m not sure where that came from.

“It was my best day ever, it was unbelievable. The best I’ve done on this course is 79 around six or seven years ago. My legs were shaking at the end when I rolled in a putt at the 18th, if I’d known how important it was I’d have been jelly.”

The Bowood duo will now play in the £22,000 final, in association with Golfplan, which will be held between November 21-22 at Mazagan Beach Resort, Casablanca.

“We didn’t even know what the prize was,” said 13 handicapper Brazewell, a 50-year-old beer wholesaler. “Then, when we opened the envelope, we just thought ‘wow!’.”

McLean admitted his captain more than contributed to the victory.

“I’ve been personal friends with Jason for about 20 years, he will tell you himself that when we play we are generally pretty much rubbish. He shot 75 on his own which he’s never done,” said McLean.

“It was just one of the those days, we were laughing at the end, it was ridiculous. I couldn’t even get on the scorecard. I said after our round that we’d probably done enough and sure enough, we had. It was just genuinely quite funny, Jason was holing 70 foot putts.

“We thought it’d fall apart at any moment, but it didn’t. I can’t say home advantage counted for anything, Jason just couldn’t put a foot wrong.”
