Breakthrough for Henderson

It’s taken him the best part of 10 years but Robert Henderson has finally won his first PGA North event after eclipsing a 36-strong field at Lancaster in the second of a series of players’ fixtures.

The Dean Wood based professional birdied two of the last three holes to post a two-under-par 69 and edge out by a shot serial winner and playing companion Craig Corrigan, from Chilli Dip, and Bolton’s Daniel Bradbury.

Such an achievement would probably have never been on the cards for Henderson until he vowed between Christmas and New Year to get a grip of his game.

He said: “I was coming up to 36 so I told myself that if I didn’t put in some time I’d never see how well I could play. It can get busy in the shop and I teach as well which can mean the game taking a back seat.

“But I managed to practise more regularly and that encouraged be to play more. I entered a few Lancashire events and my best finish was second at Hesketh. I think I’d lost my way in the game but I can start enjoying it again.”

Henderson also birdied the first two holes on the outward nine to negate a brace of bogeys early in his round.

“I holed a long putt on the 17th where Craig, who had been three up on me at one time, dropped two shots,” he said.

“There’s no going back now. I’ve already entered nearly all the main PGA North events!”

LEADING SCORES: 69 Robert Henderson (Dean Wood); 70 Craig Corrigan (Chilli Dip), David Bradbury (Bolton); 71 Tim Ford (Liverpool DR), Andrew Palmer (Chorley), Tom Metcalfe (Gathurst).
