Brewing giants Carlsberg Marston’s have increased their support for golf in the PGA South West region by agreeing to sponsor Gloucestershire and Somerset PGA’s annual Matchplay Championship.
Marston’s backed the competition for several years until it joined forces with Carlsberg in 2020 and the Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (CMBC) was formed.
The new venture has subsequently supported the region’s Order of Merit and, following discussions with Gloucestershire and Somerset PGA Captain Mark Singleton, will sponsor the 2023-24 Matchplay Championship.
Singleton, the head PGA Professional at Somerset’s Wheathill Golf Club, explained: “We’ve been in partnership with Carlsberg Marston’s at our club ever since the merger and they’ve been a great company to deal with.
“It has been an honour to play a part in the agreement to get them back as the sponsor for our Matchplay event.”
This year’s format will involve the top 16 players from last season’s Total Triumph Order of Merit drawn in ranking order to play the round of 16 before Christmas.
The quarter finals will be played before mid-March and the final four will battle it out over 36 holes, semi finals and finals, in one day to decide the Carlsberg Marstons Matchplay Champion.
Brickhampton Court’s Ross Langdon (pictured) will be the top seed courtesy of his Order of Merit win with Brean’s Andrew March ranked second. Lilley Brook’s Ed Goodwin will be the third seed in the event and defending champion, Filton’s Giuseppe Licata, completes the top four.
