** Paul Broadhurst, l, receives trophy from The PGA's Tom Sheffield.

Paul Broadhurst crushed the challenge of fellow Ryder Cup player Phillip Price with another superb display in the sunshine to win the PGA in England and Wales (South West) Cornish Festival by seven shots.

He trailed Price by two going into the final day but the Welshman failed to master the crosswinds at Newquay and signed for two-over-par 71.

Broadhurst, meanwhile, was relishing the benign Trevose links.

His seven-under 64 included two eagles at the par five ninth and the par four 15th when he holed a 60-yard wedge for the second successive day.

Five birdies at the second, fourth, sixth, 10th and 11th more than compensated for two dropped shots.

“I made a few putts today including a couple of monsters at 9 and 10,” he said. “I knew Phil was at seven under after his round at St Enodoc as my playing partners kept me informed. They also did well and finished second in the team event.

“It’s been a great week for all of us as the weather was superb, the courses outstanding and there is nothing better than playing in fine weather.

“I always enjoy playing links golf and prefer it when there is a little bit of wind.

“This is becoming one of my favourite weeks as I shared the title with Simon Lilley two years ago and was second last year.”

He hopes to return but has set a target of qualifying for the Champions Tour in America next year and hopes to make final qualifying in Phoenix in December.

Price, who led after the first two rounds, was runner-up while PGA Europro Tour player Laurie Canter (Saltford) claimed third after he aced the eighth using a 9-iron for his third career hole in one.

He also added four birdies in  a two-under 69 and helped his team win the team prize on 46-under-par 257 – two better than the Broadhurst quartet.

Canter’s partners (below) were Andy Carter (Letchworth, off nine), Shane Rowe (Cumberwell Park, 9) and Johnny Grace (Bath, plus 1).

Mark Wiggett, who teaches at Dudsbury and Queens Park, followed his impressive 66 at St Enodoc and 69 at Trevose with a slightly disappointing one-over 70 at windy Newquay. But his consistency brought fourth place.

Paul Jones (Canford Magna), the Dorset and Wiltshire PGA Order of Merit winner, set the early pace at Trevose making seven birdies in a four-under 67. His two-under 207 earned a share of fifth with Matthew Cort (Rothley Park) whose bogey on the last at Trevose proved expensive.
