Paul Broadhurst was determined not to be outdone by fellow Ryder Cup player Phillip Price in the PGA of England and Wales (South West) Cornish Festival when he carded what is believed to be the lowest ever round by a professional at St Enodoc.
But the irrepressible Price shot three-under-par at Newquay to follow his 65 at Trevose and take a two-shot lead into the final day of the £18,000 54-hole competition. Price faces the tough St Enodoc while Broadhurst tackles the more benign Trevose in the final round.
Broadhurst, six times a European Tour winner and now playing at Northants County Golf Club, took advantage of favourable sunny conditions to post five-under-par 64 over one of the most challenging links layouts in Britain.
The legendary Dai Rees covered the 6,299-yards in 67 in 1966 and home assistant professional Mark Arrowsmith lowered the mark to 65 in 2007.
Broadhurst enjoyed the benefit of the lift-clean and place rule so a record could not be established.
“I could have been four-under after four but I didn’t feel great with my putter and just had to be patient,” said the 49-year-old former winner of a festival he has thoroughly enjoyed since he started visiting Cornwall.
After birdies at the first and eighth the Midlander followed with seven pars until a round-defining shot on the 551-yard 16th. He sunk his wedge from 60 yards for an eagle and followed with an eight-foot birdie putt at the tough 206-yard par-three 17th.
After an impressive 66 at St Enodoc Mark Wiggett (Dudsbury) returned two-under 69 at Trevose where he birdied the second and then made fours on the three par-fives to claim third place.
Peter Baker (South Staffs), a third Ryder Cup man in the field and another past winner, lies fourth after a one-under return at Trevose where Russ Berry (Professional Golf Europe) and Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) were the day’s low scorers on 68. Laurie Canter (Saltford) signed for a 69 at St Enodoc to remain level with Baker in fourth.
Bebb and Stuart Little (Minchinhampton) are two-under-par in sixth place.
