Adam and Stuart Runcie (Abergele Golf Club) proved that knowing your playing partner inside out, as brothers do, can only benefit your scorecard in a fourball format when they finished with a 61 (-11) on the first day of the Golfbreaks PGA Fourball Championship at Carden Park Resort.
Securing three birdies and an eagle through holes 12 to 15 topped off an already strong round for the pair.
“Our games are very similar and it’s nice to have a game with my brother," said Stuart. “Over the years we’ve been here a lot, under 12s Welsh coaching was here but we haven’t been here for about five years so it’s nice to come back.”
Adam elaborates: “We know each other’s games like the back of our hands – we’ve played so much golf together over the years, and we just played so solid today. We dovetailed really well, took advantage of the par 5’s and had a great run on the back 9 which really helped us.”
Having followed in his older brother Stuart’s footsteps by starting his PGA training, the brothers are thrilled to be playing alongside each other once again in a professional tournament.
Adam continued: “It’s my first year in The PGA and as soon as I started doing The PGA course, I said let’s go play in this – it’s been a long time since we’ve done anything like this so it’s nice to get back doing it.”
The weather held up on day one of the Golfbreaks PGA Fourball Championship and the scoring was strong throughout the morning and afternoon on the Cheshire course with the majority of the field finishing under par.
With multiple pairings sitting just behind the leaders at 10-under-par, it’s all to play for going into day two.
Stuart added: “Looking at the scoring we’re going to have to keep it going, I don’t think we’ll be able to ease off!”
