Surrey golfer David Callaway is confident Great Britain and Ireland can overcome the odds when they lock horns with old rivals America in the PGA Cup.

The Milford Golf Club PGA pro will be part of Russell Weir’s 10-man team hoping to steer their country to victory at Northumberland’s De Vere Slaley Hall from September 20-22.

If they can claim the prestigious Llandudno Trophy it would be the first GB&I win in the PGA Professionals’ equivalent of the Ryder Cup since 2005 when Jim Farmer captained his side to victory at The K Club in Ireland.

Callaway has already had a taste of the golfing rivalry between the two nations having studied business management and marketing at McNeese State University in Louisiana for four years while continuing his development as a golfer.

“We used to have mini games between the Europeans and the Americans and there was always a fair bit of rivalry to them, so something like this should be a great experience,” he explained.

“My time in America really helped me to develop, it taught me a lot about getting a golf ball around a course, and also the importance of working hard and never giving up.

“Of course, having spent time over there it would be that little bit sweeter if we can win, but I’m also looking forward to meeting the American team and getting to know them.”

With 10 rookies in the side, Weir’s side could be viewed as underdogs against an experienced American team but Callaway insists the hosts are more than capable of claiming the Llandudno Trophy on the 40th anniversary of the biennial competition which features a mixture of foursomes, fourballs and singles match play.

“It doesn’t matter how experienced their players are, it’s just important that we don’t get intimidated and we stay confident,” he added.

“None of us have played in the event before, but that’s not a bad thing because everyone is excited and really up for the weekend.”

Callaway is now eagerly anticipating his chance to shine during a week that he regards as the pinnacle of his career.

“I’m really excited,” he said. “I realised it was getting close when all my clothing arrived, and now everything is starting to build towards the tournament.

“I’m over the moon to have the chance to play in the PGA Cup, it was always my ambition to play in a big team event like this. It’s a phenomenal competition and I’m honoured to have the chance to be a part of it.”
