Langley Park Golf Club’s Peter Kilford will be hoping to play his part in maintaining Paul Sherman’s impressive record in the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro-Captain Challenge.
The Kent-based pair will be in a 56-strong field in the regional qualifying event at The Addington, Surrey, on September 1, aiming to win a place in the final in Spain.
The final carries a £25,000 prize fund and will be contested over one of the two Greg Norman designed-courses at Lumine Mediterranea Beach & Golf Community at the end of November.
And Sherman, the club’s head PGA professional (pictured), is again looking to be among the contenders after qualifying for the final three years ago.
He has also experienced second and third placed finishes since then and
Kilford, the club’s captain, knows expectations from the duo will be high.
However, his results playing alongside Sherman so far this season have been good.
“We’ve played around 25 captain-pro events this year and only lost once,” said Kilford, who plays off 10 and works as a money broker.
“We’ve had a good run and hopefully we can keep that going at The Addington. I realise I’ll have to live up to Paul’s record in this competition but we’ve been playing well.”
Kilford knows he will be in good hands as Sherman knows his way around the Croydon venue.
“That’s the upside,” added the 50-year-old from Beckenham. “Paul never has a shocker. He might have a not so good day but never a bad one. It takes the pressure off a little and that’s what makes it enjoyable.
“Paul seems to take to The Addington as well, it’s a course that suits him. And we’re good friends too which always helps in this type of competition.”
Sherman says he is determined to reach the final once more and added: “It’d be nice to get there again, especially after doing it in 2013 and coming so close the last two years.
“It’s a different venue for the final as well so I’d like to play there too. Peter and I get on very well so I hope it comes together on the day."
Among the teams from the south also taking part in The Addington qualifier are: Charles Giddins and Andy Hulls (Beauport Park); Dusan Gavrilovic and Peter Denham (Buckinghamshire); Rob Colborne and Alan Wheatley (Farnham); Ian Benson and Steve Burton (Hindhead); Wraith Grant and Len Porter (Woodcote Park); and Alastair Briggs and Jon Hibberd (Test Valley).
