Caught at the death

08/06/2013

Tim Rice posted an early day 69 to top the leaderboard in the Etihad €9,000 PGA Pro-am, at shore side Malahide.

But he had a long anxious wait to see if his one-under-par performance would be good enough for the winner's cheque.

And he was denied outright victory when late in the evening sunshine Eddie Doyle walked in to match Rice's performance and snatch half of the top prize.

The pair finished just one stroke ahead of Dunfanaghy's Seamus McMonagle.

Former EuroPro player Rice did his work on the front nine which he covered in three-under-31.

A birdie two at the second hole and back-to-back threes at eight and nine did the trick. Those birdies, from 20, two and six feet, were a relief as he had no birdies on the back nine where he pencilled in seven pars with bogey five at the 16th and bogey six at 17.

It was a much similar performance by Doyle who, also, teed off at the 10th hole and turned two over after bogey and double-bogey at 12 and 13.

Like Rice, he turned two-over after birdies from 10, four, one and 15 feet on the first, fourth, seventh and ninth greens.
