Celebration time for Morgan and O’Riordan at Ormskirk

05/08/2022

Holly Morgan was victorious in battle in winning the OCEANTEE WPGA Series event at Ormskirk but Abigail O’Riordan won the war by establishing an unassailable lead in the Order of Merit at the Lancashire venue.

Morgan, who was playing in only her second event of the season, reprised the form that resulted in her topping the Order of Merit in 2019, not least at the par-five 18th.

Royal Liverpool Golf Club’s Rebecca McGeehan was already in the clubhouse on three-under par having signed off with an eagle when Morgan exited the 17th green.

She was also on three-under and, needing a birdie to claim outright victory and the £700 winner’s cheque, the pro from Hallamshire Golf Club rose to the challenge.

The birdie was one of six she recorded in a four-under par 69 that left her a shot clear of McGeehan and five ahead of 2019 Women’s PGA Cup team-mates Suzanne Dickens and the host club’s Ali Gray.

Gray was playing in the final three-ball alongside O’Riordan (above) who finished tied-seventh with Maria Martindale on three-over, a position that earned her three-and-a-half points and increased her lead in the Order of Merit.

All of which means that, with one event left to play that carries Order of Merit points, the PGA trainee from Royal Norwich Golf Club cannot be caught.

As a trainee, however, she is ineligible to earn selection for the team that will represent Great Britain and Ireland in the Women’s PGA Cup in the USA in October and two places in the five-strong line-up remain to be filled.
