Tom Cheetham fired a bogey-free round of 64 in the Q school event at Pype Hayes to triumph by three shots and earn his place at this season's main events.
The Chase Golf Club (Cannock) pro managed to keep a five off his card and recorded six successive threes during a dazzling spell around the turn before finishing his round off in style with two closing birdies.
It was a complete performance and the Staffordshire pro can now look forward to making a big impression in the main summer Order of Merit tournaments following a disappointing 2013.
“My short game and putter were on fire, I seemed to manage to get up and down from the trickiest of positions to save pars and stay bogey free” enthused Tom.
Tom finished tied first at Q school last year but failed to go on to succeed in the big events and is looking forward to putting that right this summer. “After this round I'll be looking for a big improvement on last year's scoring and I'm aiming to finish high up in the Order of Merit table. It's the first time I've played at Pype Hayes and I was impressed with the course” he added.
Andrew Willey, the Bulwell Forest pro also shone at the event with a four under 67, two shots clear of Jack Ronan, Robert Bardsley, Connor Steels and Kevin Crossland, all with 69s. The second and final tour school event takes place at Henley G&CC on May 20th.
