Chris Gill has been appointed Cornwall PGA chairman but his reign may be short-lived given that plans for the county to join forces with the Devon PGA are well-advanced.
A merger involving the neighbouring county PGAs has been mooted for more than a year but disruption caused by the coronavirus-related lockdowns has prevented it from going ahead.
Gill, the head pro at Newquay Golf Club and former Cornwall PGA captain, explained: “I understand there are a few i’s to be dotted and t’s to be crossed but it’s not too far away from happening.
“I’m not sure what the situation will be as far as my position as chairman is concerned if we become the Devon and Cornwall PGA - I guess that’s one of the matters that will have to be resolved.”
Meanwhile, in the light of what happened last year following the end of the first lockdown, Gill is anticipating another busy summer when the current one ends and golf courses are allowed to reopen.
“Golf in Cornwall really took off when the lockdown ended last year,” he recalled. “Courses were full and the demand for coaching was huge. It was manic – I don’t remember ever being so busy. Hopefully, the same will happen again this year.”
